On inclusive language
Inclusive language attempts to be respectful, accurate, unbiased, and consistent with the preferences of the individuals and communities who are being discussed. It avoids verbiage that might be considered to exclude certain groups or individuals. We strive to use inclusive language whenever possible. The challenge is to balance that language with simplicity and readability when writing about topics that can be difficult to understand.
Currently Birth Emergency Skills Training is largely following the style sheet of the American College of Nurse-Midwives version 5.1 as follows.
https://quickening.midwife.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/JMWH-Style-Guide-5.1-dec-2018.pdf The following article gives further guidance with pronouns. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jmwh.13225
Our goal is to improve our use of inclusive language over time and with each edition of the book. If you, the reader, are uncomfortable with our choice of words, please email us stating the issue and how you feel it should read. Andrea and Avril will consider incorporating suggestions in the workshops (miniwife@sbcglobal.net) and Bonnie (info@birthemergency.com) will consider incorporating changes in the next edition of Birth Emergency Skills Training.
